Description

The Mendelssohn family embodies the ideal of the enlightened educated bourgeoisie and cultural assimilation according to the Haskalah model like no other in 19th century music history. In this lecture, the work of Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn will be examined as a contrasting pair in this context. It will focus on the reception of the writings of their grandfather Moses Mendelssohn, the family's self-image, Jewish music networks in Europe, as well as gender-specific aspects of musical education and careers in the 19th century. The contextualization and analysis of various musical works will open up the oeuvre of both composers and briefly illuminate the historiography of both figures.
