- Description
The great Hamburg political scientist Udo Bermbach died in July 2024. After Kant, Hegel and Marx, he discovered Richard Wagner for himself, researched the interplay between society, politics and music theater, analyzed the left-wing revolutionary Richard Wagner and contrasted this image of the composer with his later appropriation by nationalist and National Socialist right-wing ideology. Bermbach's findings were incorporated into Jürgen Flimm's Bayreuth "Ring" production and have had a decisive influence on the reception of the Bayreuth master ever since. The intensive examination of the entire tetralogy "Der Ring des Nibelungen" in our musicology seminar will be deliberately approached from different angles, in keeping with the complexity of the work. In presentations by the students, the depth psychology of C.G. Jung and the archetypes discovered in the Ring by Robert Donington in his book "Richard Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung and its Symbols", as well as political perspectives, will be examined more closely. Of course, it is also important to analyze the musical structure, the use of leitmotifs and the specific treatment of the vocal parts and the orchestra. Reference productions (not only from Bayreuth) from the past and present will also be compared in excerpts. Since the seminar will focus on the students' presentations, which require appropriate preparation, we will assign binding topics and (presentation) dates in the first session, followed by several sessions with introductory lectures by the seminar leader until the participating students take over the organization of the sessions through their presentations. The oral presentations will also be submitted in a written version at the end of the semester.
