- Description
Playability, immersion and interactivity - these are three central concepts that are associated with digital games and their sound design. The seminar will examine the diverse interrelationships between music, sound design and ludic structures - i.e. the "sound world" of video games, which is conceived as an interdisciplinary search for clues in the field of tension between music, media and cultural studies. The focus is on the socio-cultural and technical framework conditions as well as the more specific functions and design methods of music in digital games. The focus is on both historical and contemporary practices. The aim is to determine which strategies were/are used and to what extent they contributed/contribute to the gaming experience: How do music, sound effects, language and images interact in the case studies? In addition to analyzing specific examples, the focus is on the production conditions and the respective roles of composers and sound designers. The main focus is on ludomusicological methodology, i.e. the question of how a systematic description and analysis of music in games is possible. The aim of the seminar is to promote a critically reflective perspective on the medium and to develop a profound understanding of the sonic dimensions. The first session serves to organize and plan the subsequent sessions.
