Description

Hardly any other opera in the 400-year history of the genre was as momentous as Richard Wagner's music drama "Tristan and Isolde". The harmonic tension of the Tristan chord crowns the late Romantic period and marks the beginning of modernism. The order of tonality is broken up so radically that composers of the 20th century refer to Wagner's boldest creation one after the other. But the later "master" from Bayreuth also broke down social boundaries: the material of the Middle Ages was reinterpreted in the light of his own life and the emancipation efforts of his time. The work "Tristan and Isolde", which was initially considered unplayable, remains a challenge to this day. The vocal and dramatic demands on the title roles are immense. The questions of interpretation by the production teams are just as great, as the largely internal plot with its philosophical layers of depth, which in particular reflects Wagner's intensive reading of Schopenhauer, repeatedly leaves his vision of an "invisible theater" unresolved. The seminar will examine the work in all its complexity: The leitmotif technique perfected by Wagner in it will be analyzed on the basis of selected central scenes, as will the famous Tristan chord. The special features of the voice parts of the high dramatic soprano and the heldentenor should be worked out and the literary influences placed in relation to Wagner's poetry. Contrasting musical interpretations will be compared, as will reference productions by Ruth Berghaus (Hamburg), Heiner Müller (Bayreuth) and Dmitri Tchnerniakov (Berlin). Since the seminar will focus on the students' presentations, which require appropriate preparation, we will assign and set binding topics and dates in the first session until the participating students independently take over the organization and preparation of the sessions through their presentations after the seminar leader's keynote speeches. Basic knowledge of the work and the willingness to give an oral presentation and prepare a written presentation are prerequisites for participation.
