Description

What kind of “understanding” is necessary to bring music to the stage? How can one achieve an interpretation of a work that is both original and grounded in the score—and perhaps even bold?

A musical composition has both rationally comprehensible and inexplicable aspects. The latter should not be confused with mere speculation. A musical work arises from a concrete idea that undergoes an equally concrete development in the course of the compositional process. Insights into the musical material, its development, and its transformation form the foundation for a personal and fresh perspective—even, or perhaps especially, on seemingly well-known classical works. After all, why play a familiar piece over and over again when everyone already knows it?

The seminar follows these thematic lines. The focus of the discussion is on the works brought by the students—pieces they already play or would like to play.

To earn the CP, students are required to give an approximately 15-minute oral presentation on a selected composition.
