This semester, we want to focus our analysis of musical works on notation and discuss various modernist ideas regarding how composers notate their sonic visions for the performing musicians. What possibilities do different approaches to notation offer? How do I notate specific, unusual sounds in a way that ensures they are always reproducible? Or, in entirely different cases, how do I use ambiguities in notation to achieve a new yet satisfying sonic result each time? What are the musical strengths and weaknesses of different approaches? What can be notated, and what cannot? And why might it sometimes be desirable not to notate everything at all?
