Description

By 1900 at the latest, the very concept of the symphony as a genre was being put to the test. Oscillating between absolute and programmatic approaches, and between expanded and innovative notions of form, the genre sought to assert itself in the context of early modernism. This study will examine both symphonic works rooted in the traditions of national schools and those that transcend genres or break with conventional forms, including works by Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Jean Sibelius, Carl Nielsen, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Alexander Scriabin, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Sergei Prokofiev, and Dmitri Shostakovich.
