This seminar provides an introduction to the fundamentals of theater studies and explores basic concepts of theater—such as performance, theatricality, performativity, acting, space, the body, and the audience—as well as related theoretical approaches. To this end, each week students are assigned a text or text excerpt to read independently as homework, which is then discussed together in class. In addition to exploring the fundamentals of the performing arts in depth, we also practice reading theoretical texts.
