Description

This seminar introduces the fundamentals of gender and queer theory and explores possibilities for queer and queer-feminist performance art and theater practice. Students will read and discuss theoretical texts by authors such as Laura Mulvey, Judith Butler, bell hooks, and Legacy Russell as part of their independent reading. Using examples from both feminist performance art of the 1960s and 1970s and contemporary theater and performance, we will also examine artistic strategies for deconstructing gender identities, queer-feminist empowerment, and the construction of queer identities. If possible, current performances in Hamburg will be included.
