The Global Groove Lab is an ensemble for students who write their own music and want to try it out right away with a band. The starting point is the rhythmic traditions of various musical cultures—Brazilian, Afro-Caribbean, West African, and Middle Eastern grooves—which are treated not as styles to be copied, but as material for original composition.
Over the course of the semester, participants develop their own pieces, which are arranged, revised, and performed together during rehearsals. In addition, the course offers insights into groove concepts, form construction, voicings, and improvisation over non-functional harmonic structures.
The ensemble is open to all instruments and voices. Composition experience is expressly not a prerequisite—but a willingness to contribute your own material during the semester is.
