Description

Chamber music without sheet music or a conductor—First, we’ll find our way to playing together in a playful way, for example: starting and stopping together without making eye contact, dialogue games, forms of instrumentation, and rhythmic exercises. The “permitted material” is initially open-ended but will then take shape through exercises involving various scale systems and harmonic progressions: Lydian-Mixolydian, Messiaen’s modes, Kumoi and Iwato, Melakarta scales, pentatonic; as well as polytonality, tone and noise, and rhythmic textures. We will discover gestures, forms, and possibilities for instrumentation and draw inspiration from great “role models.” Therefore, there is also an analytical component, though it always takes shape through practical music-making.
