Conservatories and music academies have long since ceased to train only musicians or music educators. Musicians and educators curate concerts, introduce works, discuss creative and performance processes, explain structures, explore interdisciplinary contexts, and develop critical perspectives. All of these are already steps toward “artistic music research.”
This seminar aims to sensitize our thinking to the differences, distinctive features, and potentials of art and research, and to highlight the epistemic horizons of musician-researchers and educator-researchers at our college. It seeks to question both seemingly established scientific methods and the often self-referential structures of works and processes. It not only contrasts hermeneutic theory-building with aesthetic practice but also attempts to bring them together.
To this end, the seminar discusses foundational texts in artistic (music) research and provides an overview of scientific paradigms and research approaches. The focus is on transferring these approaches to the field of music: What forms of knowledge might we encounter in music and in the act of making music? What research perspectives open up when considering creative and rehearsal processes or performance situations? The seminar explores how we can encourage art and science—in the context of music—not only to speak about one another, but also to think together. The seminar is therefore not primarily aimed at those who are already pursuing an artistic-scientific project, but rather at all those who wish to “explore” their engagement with music.Credit can be earned for 2 CP (active participation and discussion format) or 3 CP (active participation, discussion format, and an artistic-scientific contribution).
