The ensemble is dedicated to the diversity of Latin America’s rhythmic traditions and musical forms of expression, as well as their varied connections to jazz and improvised music. The focus is on the practical exploration of different rhythmic concepts, playing styles, and musical practices from various regions and cultural contexts in Latin America.

Through ensemble playing, students explore selected rhythms and grooves, their fundamental structures, and various forms of phrasing, accompaniment, and musical interaction. The aim is not merely to reproduce individual forms stylistically, but to gain a deeper understanding of their rhythmic logic and their potential applications in a jazz context.

Using a selected repertoire, collaborative arrangements, and improvisation, the ensemble explores how Latin American rhythmic concepts can be adapted to different musical situations and integrated with the expressive tools of jazz. The course also addresses issues of individual interpretation, ensemble playing, and the interplay between rhythmic structure and improvisation.

The ensemble is open to students of all instrumental disciplines and offers both an introduction to Latin American rhythms and opportunities to build upon existing experience.
