The aim of this course is to develop musical awareness of how musicians in a jazz ensemble can listen to one another, express their musical voice, and communicate through their playing. In addition, the specific roles of individual instruments in various jazz stylistic contexts are explored. How can a rhythm section play together in a cohesive and inspiring way?

A key focus is on training students’ perception and expressive possibilities when making music: What possibilities exist within the creative spaces between acting and interacting, soloing and accompanying, freedom and responsibility? Through style-independent free improvisations, students develop the ability to spontaneously tell stories together. Through group discussions, students are encouraged to discover jazz as a musical philosophy.

Each academic year features the music of specific composers such as Wayne Shorter, Bill Evans, or Lennie Tristano.
