- Description
Not only the history of opera, but also the histories of its staging and performances are wide-ranging. This seminar is designed to introduce students to the analytical tools, terminology, and specific repertoire pieces at the Hamburg State Opera. In conjunction with the seminar, there is an opportunity to work as a guide at the Hamburg State Opera: When Tobias Kratzer took over as artistic director a year ago, the Hamburg State Opera launched the new program series FRAMING the REPERTOIRE. Through discussions, lectures, and artistic interventions, this series explores the artistic and historical foundations of the Hamburg State Opera’s repertoire, placing each production in both a contemporary and historical context. Guides—students who engage with the audience and serve as experts on the respective production—are present at all performances. This seminar is designed to prepare participants for their role as guides.
Duties of the guides:
- Accompany performances of repertoire pieces and engage in discussion with the audience before, during, and after the performance.
- Select repertoire pieces by series (assignments are made for all performances of a revival; for example, one applies for all 4 performances of the *Falstaff* revival).
- Prepare content related to the operas (if possible, through a seminar offered in cooperation with the Hamburg University of Music and Drama, which provides training in production and opera history as well as in open and engaging conversation).Requirements:
- Interest in musical and historical content
- A personal and confident manner when interacting with the audience, strong communication skills, and a joy in engaging with others
- Proficiency in German and EnglishCompensation:
- €65–85 per shift, depending on the shift length
