Psychodynamic music therapy is based on the theory and modified clinical practice of psychoanalysis. Fundamental texts on psychoanalytic theory, its cultural-historical origins, and the epistemological stance of psychoanalysis will be read and discussed. Key concepts of psychoanalytic thought and their application in music therapy practice will be explored. Using (music therapy) case vignettes and selected (contemporary and historical) psychoanalytic case reports, the course explores the distinctive features of the psychoanalytic method and scenic understanding as the foundation for psychodynamic music therapy.
