The seminar is designed as a combined course in instrument history, music literature, and
performance practice. It examines the development of piano construction in parallel with the emergence and expansion of the pianistic repertoire from 1700 to 1884. The focus is on both aspects of instrumentology—from Cristofori’s hammer piano to the Steinway Model D—as well as the
musical-historical and literary diversity of piano music.
Particular emphasis is placed on questions of performance practice: What possibilities does a historically informed approach to interpretation open up for contemporary piano art? And what insights can be gained from this for a future-oriented artistic practice?In addition to working with method books and contemporary sources, the seminar also offers hands-on exploration of historical keyboard instruments from the collection of the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg.
