The seminar focuses on the historically informed interpretation of fugues. Regardless of the century, the fugue has always held musical relevance. While its heyday undoubtedly lay between about 1650 and 1740, it subsequently became increasingly seen as an archaic element or a demonstration of compositional skill. Interestingly, the first major textbook on the fugue—Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg’s “Treatise on the Fugue” from 1753—was not written until after this period. After taking a brief journey through the history of the fugue, we will explore Marpurg’s terminology and thought processes and relate them to the music of his time; building on this foundation, however, we will play fugues from every century and classify them historically and conceptually. In doing so, we will become familiar with the individual styles of composers and eras and gain valuable insights into the variety of one of the most enduring genres in music history.
