Few genres of music offer as few points of reference as medieval music. As early as 1477—at the dawn of the musical Renaissance—Johannes Tinctoris wrote that only works less than 40 years old were “auditu dignum,” or worth listening to. Even at the beginning of the Renaissance, composers and musicians felt a sharp stylistic break from the recent past. Our journey will begin with the *Musica enchiriadis* from the year 900, then lead us through the great Notre-Dame manuscripts documenting the music of the late 12th century, to Guillaume de Machaut, the Italian Trecento, and the Ars subtilior, all the way to the beginning of the 15th century and the music that Tinctoris finally considered “auditu dignum.” We will see that there are significant stylistic differences even within these 500 years, and—especially with a little practice in listening and playing—we will learn to appreciate the masterpieces of the era. Since presumably none of us has the appropriate instruments for this music anyway, anyone interested—regardless of profession—is welcome; we will play and sing in 440 Hz. We’ll pay special attention to what’s known as Pythagorean tuning, which was standard in the Middle Ages and produces perfect fifths and fourths—but also very high and dissonant thirds.
