This seminar explores the fundamentals of historical performance practice: What is a source of performance practice, and what does it tell us—but also what does it not tell us? Why is it important to know how the music of past centuries sounded at the time it was composed? Is “standard” historical performance practice actually historical at all?
In addition to these questions, the seminar will cover the fundamentals of Renaissance and Baroque music through instrumental practice, including articulation, dynamics, instrumentation, genres, and the original performance contexts of the works. To this end, small ensembles will be formed—depending on the participants—to rehearse individual works.- Literature
