From the earliest legible adiasthematic neumes, through diasthematic neumes, line notation, modal notation, and other early rhythmic notations, to the beginnings of black mensural notation, Trecentonotation to today’s late form of white mensural notation, which has not changed significantly since around 1550: A great deal has happened before notation became what we can (for the most part) read fluently today. While the notation of pitch in Western music has posed no problems for over 1,000 years, the notation of rhythm— that is, musical timing, has repeatedly remained abstract and presents new challenges to emerging styles, which is why the notation of rhythm continued to expand and refine itself well into the 20th century.
Notation 1 (winter semester) traces the history of musical notation up to the development of modern notation in the 16th century, while Notation 2 (summer semester) explains notational phenomena of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods.- Literature
