The goal of the seminar is to learn how to apply stylistically appropriate ornamentation in Baroque music. Participants will write and improvise ornamentation in the style of historical sources and discuss what “stylistic appropriateness” actually means in the context of free ornamentation—and whether it is even desirable. The seminar will also explore the boundaries of ornamentation: on the one hand, playing techniques such as vibrato, which were considered ornaments in certain eras, but were standard instrumental and vocal practices in others; on the other hand, written-out ornamentation, which—by virtue of being notated—has become an immutable part of the composition, a development that preceded all other composers in the work of Johann Sebastian Bach. “Ornamentation 1” is devoted to the so-called “essential manners”—that is, ornamentations that can be represented by notation.
