Where can we find what? The two-semester seminar on source criticism introduces the most important treatises of the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods and is primarily aimed at students in the Early Music program as well as those with a deep interest in historical performance practice. Often, a quick glance at the table of contents is enough for a trained eye to determine what is relevant in a source and what can safely be skipped. It is precisely this discerning eye that the “Source Studies” course aims to cultivate. In addition, using the biographies of the authors (unfortunately, it is not possible to use gender-neutral language when referring to music-historical treatises), we will discuss which sources are directly and indirectly relevant to which types of music.
