Description

The ensemble combines in-depth work on the classical jazz repertoire with a broad stylistic exploration of the entire history of jazz. At its core are swing, bebop, and jazz standards, masterfully presented by veteran Prof. Fiete Felsch. In addition, arrangements and pieces from various eras are studied and compared stylistically.

The focus is on quickly grasping functional harmonic relationships, memorizing pieces on the spot, and playing without a lead sheet—with the goal of gaining freedom in interpretation and improvisation. Arrangements are worked out together, and interaction and “spontaneous arrangement” are internalized through ensemble playing.

A second focus is on historical performance practice: specific phrasing characteristics, as well as intonation and interaction within a polyphonic wind section, are specifically trained. In doing so, instrumentalists are given the opportunity to incorporate their own personal style into this practice.

Transcriptions, original compositions, and arrangements by the participants are expressly welcome and will be incorporated into the ensemble work whenever possible.
