Description

What we take away from Devising Theater is this: the form and content of a play can be developed through a collaborative process. This means that anything can be a starting point—a game, a task, or an instruction; a question, a song, a meme, an object, or even a gathering format beyond the theater.
To kick things off, we’ll focus on organizational and feedback principles for collective work in groups. As we proceed, we’ll explore various approaches to scenic development—informed by performance and live art—in modules consisting of two consecutive sessions: scores and tasks as impulses for action, biographical/autofictional text production, ritual- and material-based settings, site- and context-specific working methods, and, last but not least, interactive principles and formats. Starting in mid-December, we’ll test, invent, experiment, collect, and develop our own research designs for an artistic-research project.
Based on your research collections, we’ll begin a collaborative play development process in the upcoming summer semester. Stay tuned!

Course Requirements:
• Continuous, active participation—including preparation and follow-up work—is crucial for a successful group and individual learning process.
• Ongoing reflection: Students individually reflect on each session in a workshop journal. Over the course of the semester, this results in a personal artistic idea and toolbook.
• Every other session, we take time to reflect on the methods presented and our own experiences in trying them out.
