SLOP - Master Degree Multimedia Composition Christopher Ramm
"With very advanced technology, a very large population of people living happy lives
could be sustained in the accessible region of the universe. For every year that
development of such technologies and colonization of the universe is delayed, there is
therefore an opportunity cost: a potential good, lives worth living, is not being realized."
-Nick "The Swedish Super Brain" Bostrom-
"We are being lied to."
-Marc Andresen, Investor and Author of the "Tech Optimist Manifesto"-
Dear Audience,
The Ship is gone. Jeff, Elon, Peter, Marc, the Nicks, all of them are on their way! "New
Frontiers", that's what they say! But well, it seems we are still around, aren't we...?
Well, we don't know what you think, but the last days have been crazy. Don't know how
much you've been affected by all the Buzz: The News, the Slop, all that AI generated crap
that seeped through your ANTIVIR? I must say, that we just stopped listening to all of it
and went on doing our thing. We guess that's what most of us did, when it became clear,
that the Tech Bros wouldn't give a damn fuck about this earth. It still kinda hurts, but, we
mean at one point you gotta look out for your self. So we've been preparing this last big
final show. We've been working our asses of for you, so It would be awesome to finally
show it. Because, honestly, however stupid things turn, you gotta carry on, right?
So yeah, we hope you like it!
Best,
Josie, Eliott and Keith
SLOP, or "junk," refers to low-quality text and images produced with the help of
generative artificial intelligence. For Christopher Ramm's master's degree in Multimedia
Composition at the HFMT Hamburg, the concept of SLOP, which is increasingly littering
the virtual world, served as a metaphor for our society in late capitalism. While tech-
utopian visions of the future justify the ruthless exploitation of the planet, the majority of
the planet is sinking into virtual and real garbage. Against this backdrop, the multimedia
performance tells the story of a dance company struggling through the very near future.
In this struggle to survive and carry on, self-empowering, queer, and caring narratives of
transhumanism and the future emerge. Our own future.
SLOP is composed for Soprano, Counter Bassoon & Bassoon, Trumpet, Timpani, Tape,
Live Electronics, three Dancers, Videowalls and Light. The concept as well as the
composition has been developed by Christopher Ramm and created in close
collaboration with the respective departments. Nothing on stage originates from a
single brain or body, but has been made possible by collective effort. I want to thank
Alexander Schubert and the Multimedia Department for their amazing work of making
Multimedia Composition an outstanding program. I want to thank the whole FORUM
Team for their support. And last but not least I want to thank my partner Marco Merenda,
all my friends and all my comilitones for their tremendous support. I love you.
