Each one teach one - school sponsorships at the HfMT

Living diversity - creating access - taking responsibility

In October 2025, the HfMT will sponsor three general education schools in Hamburg. As part of a three-year sponsorship by the Culture and Schools Project Fund, students and pupils will meet in workshops, rehearsal visits and joint artistic projects.

Our stance

Sociologist Aladin El-Mafaalani states that "poverty hides talent", describing, among other things, how socio-economic barriers make access to art and culture more difficult. Our basic pedagogical approach is based on actively breaking down these barriers and creating access. "Each one teach one" connects schools and universities in a practical and sustainable way. We live education as a reciprocal process in which students, pupils and teachers inspire each other and discover artistic forms of expression together. Our approach is dialogical and respectful of different realities of life. The aim is to convey art as a social force and to enable active participation for all people.

The project

Many young people experience culture as inaccessible, while our students are looking for more mediation practice. The project connects both groups through artistic collaboration and a change of perspective. If the student body is more diverse in the future, cultural institutions will no longer remain homogeneous, but will be perceived by the general public as their places.

After a phase of getting to know each other, the artistic collaboration between students, pupils and teachers begins. The participants develop their own music and/or theater in small groups. Students accompany the creative process and thus learn from the pupils. Discussion formats enable personal encounters between the art students as potential role models and the pupils as a potential audience.

The project gives pupils direct access to Music and Drama - not as distant stage arts, but as something they can shape themselves. They learn creative techniques to express themselves artistically. At the same time, they experience that culture is not an exclusive space, but open to all. They encounter the students as role models, but also as people who listen to them, take up their ideas and create something new with them.

Participating schools

For the "each one teach one" project, a cooperation was agreed with three general education schools in Hamburg:

Max-Schmeling-Stadtteilschule (Jenfeld)
Julius-Leber-Stadtteilschule (Schnelsen)
Grundschule Westerschule (Finkenwerder)
