The application period for the 2027/28 winter semester for the Theater Education program begins on February 15, 2027, and ends on April 1, 2027.
To successfully apply to teach theater as part of a teacher education program, the following steps must be completed within the application period:
- Submission of the online application, including upload of supporting documents
- Receipt of the application fee (payment information is provided at the end of the completed online application)
Your application will only be considered if all the steps described above are completed in full within the application period and both the online application and the application fee have been received.

The entrance examination consists of a two-stage process.
A selection is made from the applications received and these are invited to the second stage in presence.
Below you will find further information on the requirements for the entrance examination.
1st stage
Entrance examination requirements
For the first stage of the entrance examination, please submit the following documents as an upload as part of the online application:
- Letter of motivation (max. 5,400 characters, incl. spaces, 1.5 lines)
- Written analysis of the provided production "Furies of Memory" (max. 5,400 characters, incl. spaces, 1.5 lines)
The link to the production for the 2026/27 application procedure will be provided in the online portal at the start of the application process after you have selected the desired degree program. If you have any problems finding the link, please contact the specialist office.
The following criteria should be considered when analyzing the staging:
- What design elements are used and how are they used?
(Space, body, voice, movement, gestures, costume, video, light, sound, etc.) - What possible effects, meanings and associations are created through the use of the means?
It is not necessary to understand every spoken word in detail for the analysis.
2nd stage
The second stage of the entrance examination is expected to take place in Hamburg between May 18 and 22, 2026.
Entrance examination requirements
The second stage of the entrance examination in presence consists of the following parts:
- a freely chosen and independently prepared individual scenic presentation with a maximum duration of 3 minutes (performance, dance, improvisation or similar)
- a scenic group task on a task set on site
- an interview with the entrance examination committee focusing on your interest in contemporary theater and educational mediation processes, among other things
Special feature for the teaching degree for secondary level I and II (LASek):
- In addition, a reading assignment in which you are to summarize and comment on a short text that you receive 20 minutes in advance in conversation with the admissions committee.

Criteria for successful completion of the entrance examination include
- Interest in contemporary theater, dance, performance
- Creativity, openness and a willingness to experiment
- Enjoy working in a group
- Interest in mediation processes and pedagogy
- Ability to reflect
