Description

Terry Riley's ensemble composition "In C" celebrates its sixtieth birthday this year and sounds more alive than ever after these six decades: if you listen to various recordings, you will immediately notice the enormous range between "historical (or historically informed) performance practice" and "musical director's theater", i.e. very free interpretations enriched with improvisational elements, for example. The instruments used are unmistakably influenced by musical globalization: in addition to versions for Japanese kotos in pure tuning, there are also versions for traditional instruments from Mali ("Africa Express") or China ("Shanghai Film Orchestra"), but also primarily electronic realizations such as that of the Swiss post-industrial trio "The Young Gods".
The seminar would like to attempt to understand "In C" in the context of its time of origin, on the one hand, and to use it as a bridge - between past and future or between different musical cultures - that can be walked on both sides, so to speak, in order to investigate comparable design principles in the works of other composers, on the other. Suggestions from course participants are very welcome!
