- Description
As a writer and poet, Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock was not only a European literary great, but also a key figure in Hamburg's musical life at the end of the 18th century. Through his second wife Johanna Elisabeth von Winthem and his friendship with Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, he was in close contact with the musical circles of the Hanseatic city and reflected on the power of music and its relationship to poetry throughout his life. In doing so, he shaped the new medium of song and recognized in music an answer to the crisis of the Enlightenment. His texts were set to music during his lifetime by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann and Carl Heinrich Graun, but remained popular well into the 19th century. Fanny Hensel, Robert Schumann and even Richard Strauss composed Klopstock songs.
To mark the 300th anniversary of Klopstock's birth, an exhibition is being prepared in collaboration with the Hamburg State and University Library. The aim of the seminar is to place Klopstock in the context of the European and Hamburg cultural history of the Enlightenment and Empfindsamkeit and to help design and academically accompany the opening concert on July 12.
