Description

Music not only unfolds spaces metaphorically, but also deals with the auditory perception of space from the very beginning. Starting with the anthropological fundamentals of human hearing, the seminar moves historically and systematically through the compositional use of concrete spatial sound design. In the seminar, we will examine the effect of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice on the music of G. Gabrieli and A. Willaert or the Invalides in Paris on the music of H. Berlioz. Similarly, realizations of acoustic spatial effects through specific arrangements of sound bodies in space, such as in the works of R. Wagner, G. Mahler, C. Ives or E. Varèse, as well as technological possibilities in the works of K.-H. Stockhausen, L. Nono, G. Ligeti or I. Xenakis, which make the sound in space audible and composable, will also be discussed.
Ultimately, however, it is always the artistic use of cultural techniques and apparatus systems that makes spatial properties an aesthetic dimension of music. These compositional techniques and technologies are the focus of the seminar and will be reflected experimentally, if possible, by the participants in practical spatial sound concepts.
