- Description
The Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889 is now firmly anchored in music history. The fascination that emanated from the gamelan ensemble that could be heard there is reflected in numerous compositions of the time, including those by Claude Debussy. The new, foreign and different musical material that could be heard here - under colonial auspices - fitted in perfectly with the dawn of modernity. The musical-aesthetic exchange remained a feature of world exhibitions for many decades; in 2010, the Chinese composer Tan Dun was appointed World Cultural Ambassador of Expo Shanghai. At the same time, inventions that shaped the further course of music history were also presented there, such as the Edison phonograph in Paris in 1889, the sound film in Philadelphia in 1926 or Karlheinz Stockhausen's spherical auditorium, with which he sought an architectural expansion of space and time in Osaka in 1970. There is hardly any other place where the term "music industry" takes on such a concrete form.
The seminar is dedicated to the numerous academic perspectives and starting points: from the question of cultural exchange in music, to political and state representation through music, to those inventions that changed the world of music forever.
