- Description
Globalization is not a phenomenon of the 20th century, but has been shaping cultural developments since the end of the 15th century at the latest. The effects of missionary work and colonization in the modern era in particular on today's musical culture can hardly be underestimated. It is therefore all the more astonishing that even in the age of "postcolonial studies", the exchange between continents has so far only played a marginal role in musicological research.
Using concrete examples, the seminar attempts to gain an overview of intercontinental music routes and transcultural music forms as well as their various socio-cultural contexts since the end of the 15th century: The interpenetration of musical cultures, e.g. in the Christmas "Negrilla" of the 16th to 18th centuries, the reflection and justification of colonization in European music (e.g. French absolutism), or missionary work with Western music, e.g. in numerous Asian countries. Finally, based on an understanding of historical developments, current manifestations of musical globalization will be examined. These include, for example, works of "academic music" in Latin American countries or specific forms of music that focus on the continent of Africa and its countries, such as African Music Theatre or African Pianism. The aim of the seminar is therefore to work out the special features of the entire field of music within different concepts of "coloniality".- Literature
Suitable literature will be announced in the seminar.
