Description

Globalization is not a phenomenon of the 20th and 21st centuries. Rather, a global perspective reveals musical paths between continents and transcultural developments in music that carry their own dynamics. In this sense, the lecture "Global Music History" (= General Music History) combines European music history with musical developments on other continents. In the first semester, selected fundamental stages from the beginnings to around 1600 - including music in Greco-Roman antiquity, secular and sacred music of the Middle Ages, Dutch vocal polyphony and Venetian polychoral music - form the framework from which to look further afield. For example, the Confucian view of music can be shown parallel to Greek antiquity (with the participation of students), the Middle Ages offer broad scope for Persian-Arabic comparisons (including the transfer via the Mozarabic region) and the colonizations of the 16th and 17th centuries open up glimpses of Latin America and the African continent.
The course is designed as a lecture/exercise. International students are very welcome.
