- Description
The seminar deals with chamber music of the 18th and 19th centuries and its aesthetic, stylistic and socio-historical characteristics. Starting from the categorization of music for church, theater and chamber, which was still common in the 18th century, the further development of chamber music towards the concert hall and salon will be examined: What is the nature of sonatas, piano trios, string quartets or wind quintets, in which contexts were they composed, rehearsed and performed? What special features underlie the repertoire?
The main aim is to leave the well-trodden repertoire paths and focus on compositions that have received little attention to date: On the one hand, the numerous works by female composers, such as Maddalena Sirmen, Louise Farrenc, Emilie Mayer or Mel Bonis, and on the other, those works that were written outside Europe, e.g. chamber music works by the Brazilian composers Carlos Gomes and Alexandre Levy or the us American composer Margaret Ruthven Lang. Many other joint discoveries will characterize the seminar.
