- Description
The year 2025 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of composer Maurice Ravel (1875-1932). With some of his orchestral works, above all the Boléro, he is one of the most frequently performed composers today. However, he is almost always regarded as an epigone of Debussy and a representative of so-called musical "impressionism". In contrast to numerous composers of his generation, such as Stravinsky, Honegger, Bartók or Schoenberg, Ravel's biography is rather unspectacular and difficult to categorize in terms of known currents and trends. In order to distance himself from the cliché of smooth perfection, this seminar will examine Ravel's instrumentation and harmony and place them in their music-historical context. The First World War, the emergence of radio, the treatment of jazz and queer networks in Paris in the 1920s will play a major role. We will also look at the reception of Ravel and critically examine the musicological genesis of the concept of 'Impressionism'.
