- Description
The need to record, capture and pass on music has led to many different forms and systems of musical notation. The seminar will take a closer look at a selection of these forms from a historical and intercultural perspective, depending on the interests of the participants. These include Greek and Ottoman letter notation, the Chinese character notation gongche, neume writing, mensural notation and tablature or linguistic forms of notation as a mnemonic support. In addition, there are special features such as Braille music notation for the blind, piano roll notation, pedagogical scripts that aim for easy legibility or notation forms of New Music, each of which is provided with a legend. The examination leads to exciting questions: How do notation and sonic reality relate to each other? What is notated retrospectively and what is composed for the future? How are musical aesthetics conveyed in musical notation and to what extent are the respective forms of recording linked to the contexts of musical realization? And how does the written representation of a composition change over time and across the centuries?
