Description

The term "Renaissance" is fraught with numerous preconceptions, does not seem to fit well with European music history and has long been used by researchers only with reservations. From 1400 onwards, however, numerous developments can be recognized as the dawn of a new world. These include the opening up of new global trade routes between Europe, Africa and Asia, the economic rise of East Asia and Italy, the invention of printing in Mainz, the development of Iberian slavery and numerous expeditions from China and Europe. The 16th century is also characterized by numerous developments, above all humanism and the Reformation. In this lecture, we will discuss how the history of music was shaped by this new world order and how it helped to determine it. We will ask how the beginning of the early modern period can be described and understood from the perspective of music.
