Description

Johann Sebastian Bach’s sonatas and partitas for solo violin are, quite rightly, a recurring focus of attention. It seems as though the possibilities for engaging with them are endless. Nevertheless, they are by no means unique when viewed within the context of music history: For example, the Central German composer Johann Paul Westhoff published a suite for solo violin as early as 1683 in the French journal *Le Mercure galant*, and in 1715, six solo sonatas by Johann Joseph Vilsmayr were published in Salzburg under the title “Artificiosus Concentus pro Camera […] a violino solo con basso belle imitante,” a title that already hints at a key compositional feature.

Led by two instructors (Christoph Schickedanz and Silke Wenzel), this seminar explores these Baroque works for solo violin in the context of their time. In doing so, the seminar will examine compositional and music-theoretical, performance-related and interpretive, socio-historical and biographical, as well as archival and editorial perspectives. The goal is to explore Bach’s sonatas and partitas while highlighting artistic, musicological, and music-theoretical aspects in such a way that they intertwine musically.

A final session, during which the seminar’s findings will be presented, as well as an excursion to the sites associated with Bach’s career (tentatively scheduled for May/June 2027), will follow in the summer semester of 2027 as a continuation of the seminar.

The seminar can be taken as a musicology seminar (2–3 credits) or as a project course for master’s students (6 credits over 2 semesters).
