This semester, we will focus on three epistemological and ethical foundations of hip-hop culture: the fifth element of hip-hop culture—the transmission of knowledge, its history, and its pedagogical aspirations—the set of values comprising authenticity, self-empowerment, and social and societal critique; and the topic of resource orientation. In doing so, we will explore the principle of “Something from Nothing” and the question of how a global cultural movement could emerge from minimal resources and social marginalization.
