From a global perspective, the lecture reveals musical connections between continents and transcultural developments in music, each of which possesses its own unique dynamics. In this sense, the course “Global Music History” (= General Music History) links European music history with musical developments on other continents. In the first semester, selected key milestones from the earliest times through approximately 1600—including music in Greco-Roman antiquity, secular and sacred music of the Middle Ages, Dutch vocal polyphony, and Venetian polychoral music —form the framework from which our perspective expands. For example, (with student participation) the Confucian view of music can be explored in parallel with Greek antiquity; the Middle Ages offer ample scope for Persian-Arabic comparisons (including its transmission through the Mozarabic world) as well as insights into the music of the world’s religions, and the colonial expansions of the 16th century provide glimpses into Latin America and the African continent.
The course is structured as a lecture and seminar. International students are warmly welcome.
