Since at least the 1880s, biting social criticism and political satire in and through music have been a significant part of popular culture. Originating in Paris, a distinct genre took root, ranging from so-called “cabaret” to lavish theatrical evenings—from the literary cabarets of the “Chat Noir” in Paris or the “Überbrettl” in Berlin to revues, popular theater, vaudeville, and operetta. Here, debates took place on participation and women’s rights, on social status and societal norms, the exploration of gender identities and roles, and the exposure of exclusion and racism. In this way, music and literature became tools for democratic participation and self-expression.
Starting in Paris, this form of entertainment spread almost worldwide in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and evolved into distinct genres with representations specifically tailored to the respective political and social realities: in Shanghai and other Chinese cities, which were shaped by various concessions, as well as in New York, where “black musical theater” emerged in the midst of a segregated environment.
