From a musicological perspective, the “value” of music has thus far been considered primarily in terms of musical aesthetics. The central question here is: “What is ‘good’ music?” In fact, however, the topic of “value and values” encompasses nearly all areas of musical processes, including composition, performance, education, and the dissemination of music. The perspectives from which this topic can be examined are correspondingly diverse. These include aesthetic, philosophical, pedagogical, economic, social, ethical, political, religious, anthropological, and therapeutic-medical perspectives.
The seminar provides a comprehensive overview of these evaluations of music and demonstrates how they depend on various social constellations, political systems, and historical circumstances. Ultimately, the value and values of music are, in and of themselves, worthy of critical examination.- Literature

The seminar is designed as an in-person course. It can be taken as a "Musicology Seminar" in all degree programs for 2 CP (attendance and presentation) or for 3 CP (+ seminar paper). Course requirements: 75% attendance and a presentation: 2 credits; with a seminar paper: 3 credits.
