With a matinee, Jugend musiziert Hamburg commemorates its former chairwoman and long-time honorary chairwoman Christa Knauer, who died in Hamburg in August 2023 at the age of 81. With impressive and tireless commitment, Christa Knauer was committed to promoting young talent until the end of her life. Some of them are now among the most sought-after musicians of our time. In 1997, she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for her work.

With foresight and inexhaustible love, Christa Knauer shaped and strengthened Hamburg's cultural life for over 50 years. Before she took over the chairmanship of the competition in Hamburg, she worked for ten years as a music, art and theater critic. From the 1980s onwards, she worked with Jugend musiziert Hamburg, first as managing director and then as chairwoman, to promote young musicians and founded the "Jugend musiziert Förderverein Hamburg e.V." in 1991. Since 1997, she has awarded the "Christa Knauer Challenge Cup" annually to outstanding musicians in the state competition. Today, this challenge cup is not the only testimony to her outstanding instinct for promising talent. Up until 2002, Christa Knauer tirelessly organized competitions, master classes with internationally renowned soloists and professors, countless concerts and connected talented young musicians with the music world. Until the end of her life, Christa Knauer supported young talents and remained closely associated with Jugend musiziert as honorary chairwoman.
