LES DIALOGUES DES CARMÉLITES
OPERA BY FRANCIS POULENC
Sunday, 06/01/2025 18:00 HfMT, Forum

Text from the work of the same name by Georges Bernanos, adapted for the opera stage with the permission of Emmet Lavery, based on a novella by Gertrud von le Fort and a script by P. B. Brückberger and Philippe Agostini.

Blanche lives in a time of great social unrest, which fills her with deep anxiety. She joins the Carmelite convent in order to regain stability in the community of nuns. However, as thick as the convent walls are, they do not protect Blanche from the events of her time. The outside world breaks in and forces the dissolution of the order.
The Carmelite nuns' intimate conversations address pressing questions of our time: How should we deal with the profound individual and collective fear in the face of current threats? How can ideological incompatibilities be bridged? One thing is certain - dialogues are needed for a common coexistence.
After Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande (1902) and before Messiaen's Saint François d'Assise (1983), Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites is one of the three most important French operas of the 20th century. Researchers even consider it to be one of the most important works of music theater in the last century. Since its successful premiere in Milan in 1957 (initially sung in Italian), the opera has been regarded as a plea for the courageous fight against inhuman ideologies of power. Since then, all internationally renowned opera houses have staged it in powerful and moving productions. The work is a welcome challenge for the two excellent singers in the Master's Opera program at the Hamburg University of Music and Drama. The Great Summer Opera 2025 will be directed by Christian Poewe, Professor of Scenic Teaching. Maestro Willem Wentzel will conduct the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra.
