Opera by Ethel Smyth
Sunday, 03/22/2026 16:00 HfMT, Forum
The palace. At night. A festive evening party. Pierrot is the bittersweet center of the glittering hustle and bustle. But in the midst of the various love affairs, jealousies and longings, Pierrot threatens to break under the expectations of an authoritarian court. Pierrot's shimmering shades emerge in the spaces in between. With their seductive longing for a different kind of love, they become a thorn in the king's side. Is it all just a puppet show? Or are there echoes of the approaching overthrow in the songs of the pirouettes?
-
"These are like you, just puppets in a play." - "Oh, what a doll can suffer!"

At its premiere in the 1920s, the English-language opera by composer Ethel Smyth was far ahead of its time with its neo-baroque musicality and modern interpretation of an old story. A good hundred years later, the Forum of the HfMT will once again become a stage for the revolutionary potential in Smyth's music: queer performances will frame the opera's performance and open up perspectives into the times after the queens and patriarchs.
